About our Founder
Yuri Lee Keown is an international fashion industry veteran with over 15 years of experience designing for many of the world’s leading fashion brands including DKNY, Victoria’s Secret, Anthropologie, and Amour Vert. Having established her career in New York City, fashion development and manufacturing has taken Yuri all over the world building initiatives and partnerships in Mexico, Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, Sri Lanka, China, India, Peru, and Portugal.
In 2017, despite having achieved most of the milestones she’d set for her career, Yuri realized how deeply unhappy she was working solely for her own benefit and decided to make a change. She quit her job, packed up her things, and set out on a six month journey traveling through India and parts of Africa in pursuit of a new way of working that would reimagine fashion industry ethics to benefit the underprivileged.
It was during this time Yuri came up with the business model for Wonky. She witnessed women working with ample skill but little opportunity in remote areas, and mothers separated from their children, traveling far from their villages and homes to earn a living at the nearest factory.
Wonky’s mission is to offer beautiful, handmade goods while generating new opportunities for artisans around the world, empowering women one product at a time.
Yuri Lee Keown has a BFA from Carnegie Mellon University, and an AAS from Parsons the New School of Design.
